Defying Gravity; Learning by Wisdom or Woe

November 18, 2009 – 3:51 pm

I am currently reading Caroline Myss’ new book, Defy Gravity; Healing Beyond the Bounds of Reason.   I feel like it is the right book at the “right” time for me and there is much that I would like to share.   In her book, Myss offers guidance for living a healthy, balanced life.  One of her recommendations is to choose to learn and live by wisdom rather than woe.

“Are your choices choices wise or will they result in woe for you or others?”

Wise choices come in many forms, Myss states.  We draw upon what we have learned from personal experience and blend it with the constant (yes, constant) flow of intuitive guidance that enters our thoughts.  The great masters and spiritual teachers offer stories that describe the universal obstacles of the human journey.  Our bodies also serve as a barometer for right action.  Stress in the solar plexus signals us that we are losing power and another course of action may be more beneficial.  Wise choices “feel” right.

Woe, according to Myss, is the “choice to wait until your fears consume you, to deny your intuitive warning signals in hopes that the winds of change will pass you by.  But they won’t.”  Perhaps another way to describe woe is burying one’s head in the sand or denying the truth of what is happening therefore making decisions from a place of “numbness” or making no decision.  At least that is my experience of it.

Wisdom rises to meet the challenges of life.  Woe is the result of thinking others will take care of our problems or that they will magically disappear.  According to Myss, our problems have a name on them because they are here for us to resolve them.  Each time we resolve them, we allowing light and grace to enter.   I’ve always tried to adopt a positive attitude  by not focusing on my “problems” but I am not sure that that has always served my highest good.  Perhaps it is better to meet them face-to-face and allow them to teach me how to accept what is and move through life with ease and grace…. instead of fighting what is.

Defy Gravity has certainly given me something to reflect upon and is offering a stretch for my imagination.   Healing, according to Myss, is not a function of the mind – there is nothing logical about it.  Healing belongs to the Soul…. I accept the challenge to defy gravity and view my from a broader and higher perspective.  Will you join me?
